Next we see that Haruie has made temporary home at Nagahide’s place. Nagahide asks if she could already go home, but there’s no way she’s going back to Kagetora since she’s so angry with him right now.
Nagahide brings out the skull. They still don’t know why it was brought to Regalo, and apparently they need Haruie’s skill for trying to figure it out. Nagahide says it’s clear it’s not an ordinary skull though, and asks if Haruie can do a spiritual reading (reisa) of it. She starts trying.
The scene cuts to Naoe who gets a phonecall about Kagetora. Kagetora is shown going somewhere alone, and struggling in a fight against someone. Naoe rushes off saying he’ll go there immediately.
Back at Nagahide’s place, Marii falls back from the skull. It seems it has been used for some kind of a curse, but she can’t tell whose skull it is yet.
Naoe runs in and Irobe, dressed in doctor’s attire, greets him. Naoe asks about Kagetora, but it seems nothing too serious has happened. Kagetora walks in with his right arm in an arm sling. Seeing Naoe there, he annoyedly asks Irobe why he called him there. They start talking about the situation, and Kagetora fills Naoe in on the skull thing and the person they think is behind it, Shinonome Jirou. More plot talk ensues, and as a conclusion Irobe tells Naoe he needs to look after Kagetora now. Kagetora is not happy about the idea, and Naoe himself says he should have Haruie, but Kagetora tells him she’s left because they fought (”again?” says Naoe). Irobe speculates that being who she is, she’ll be back soon, but until then they can’t leave Kagetora on his own. In the end Naoe consents to the arrangement despite some apparent inner struggle. After Kagetora walks off, Irobe apologizes to Naoe that he has to do this.
Now Kagetora and Naoe are alone. Kagetora tries taking out a cigarette, but finds it difficult with one hand. Naoe asks him not to smoke anyway. Kagetora complains it won’t be easy to go to a bathhouse either. Naoe offers to help, but Kagetora shrugs him off, mentioning the policy that vassals and lords shouldn’t take the bath together (I think). After arguing about it for a while, Naoe quietly observes Kagetora and asks if something has happened. Kagetora says something about difficulties with women, making Naoe falter. He asks if it’s about Haruie, but Kagetora says it’s not just her. Naoe asks if it has to do with love - to his visible relief, Kagetora calls him stupid and tells him he’s talking about work.
They talk a bit more, but in the end are interrupted by a guy with a notable scar on his face. He names Kase and asks where the skull is. Kagetora tries questioning him, but he wants the skull back and attacks Kagetora. Naoe jumps in to shield him. They guy seems to be able to dissolve Naoe’s counterattack.
Spirits flock in, and again they are having troubles with their powers. Naoe sustains some kind of injury to his neck. The spirits are controlled by the guy with the scar, who tells them their struggling is pointless. In the end they manage to fight the spirits off, with Kagetora shielding Naoe and Naoe dealing with the exorcism.
After the fight dies, the guy tells them they are dealing with Maou’s skull. They start to chase him when he leaves, but Kagetora has a fit of coughing and Naoe rushes to him instead. They find a piece of fabric that seems to reveal them something.
Back at Nagahide’s place they are still trying to convince Marii to go back to Kase, but she still refuses. Nagahide says something about a lover’s quarrel and her being actually a man. They talk a bit about Naoe and Kagetora and some trauma - Marii understands the difficulty of the situation but doesn’t relent nevertheless. They too now know the skull is Maou’s. Haruie tries reading it again, and does see something new. In the end something seems to possess her, and she calls out the name “Nobutada”. Nagahide breaks her off, and as she walks away he is left alone wondering about the skull.
To be continued.
